Stevens - Johnson syndrome is a rare syndrome that occurs due to skin and mucous membranes provide excessive reaction to a drug or infection. Often if the attacks happen the patient should be taken to a hospital for treatment, while the recovery period could take weeks and if very serious Stevens - Johnson syndrome can lead to death.

Symptoms
This syndrome begins with flu-like symptoms such as fever and sore throat, followed by red or purplish rash on the skin that feels pain and spread or even a blister. In many cases, the cells in the outermost layer of skin will die so that her skin like peeling off.

Causes
Stevens - Johnson syndrome mostly triggered by drug use, although some people can also be triggered by infection with certain bacteria. But sometimes, the exact cause is not always certain that it is difficult to prevent.

Allergic reaction is actually caused because the body considers that the incoming substance is a foreign object so that it will cause a reaction in the body's antibodies.

  • Herpes (herpes simplex or herpes zoster)
  • Influenza
  • HIV
  • Diphtheria
  • Typhoid
  • Hepatitis

In certain cases, Stevens-Johnson syndrome can also be triggered by physical stimuli such as radiotherapy and ultraviolet light.

Treatment
First aid to cope with allergy drug in Stevens - Johnson syndrome is to stop taking drugs that trigger allergies. Next is to give allergy medications (antihistamines) to relieve symptoms, or corticosteroids if symptoms are serious enough.

Adjunctive therapy given at the hospital includes dehydrations or replacement of lost body fluids by using the infusion. If injury occurs, the layer of dead skin must be cleaned and then covered with a bandage wound to avoid infection.
