Close relationship between periodontal problems and psychological disorders such as stress, anxiety, depression and loneliness has been scientifically proven.

In the report of a study published in the Journal of Periodontology mentioned, reducing stress is very significant for dental health. One cause damage to teeth and gums because stress is a hormone called cortisol.

Teeth and mouth disease caused by stresssuch as canker sores, the habit of gnashing teeth (bruxism), and gum disease. Increased levels of the hormone cortisol can also cause damage to the gums and jaw bone due to periodontal disease (gingivitis). If periodontal not treated quickly it can cause tooth loss, jawbone even eroded.

"People who have psychological disorders are usually doing unhealthy and lazy habit of treating teeth which could damage the teeth," said Preston J Miller, president of the American Academy of Periodontology. He suggested doing a relaxation activity to inhibit the production of cortisol.
